Morgue Chocolates

An assortment of dozens of chocolates in little paper cups on a robin’s egg blue surface. At first they just seem oddly shaped and lumpy, and it’s difficult to tell what you’re seeing. But then some details start to jump out: an ear, an eye. Then you can see the ones with sutures partway undone, one that looks like it might be part of an organ. Some resist interpretation even once you understand what you’re looking at. Whatever the Venn diagram intersection of “festive” and “disturbing” is, you’re looking at it.

The artist Stephen Shanabrook was the “son of an obstetrician and the town coroner,” and “as a child… worked at a chocolate factory in a small town in Ohio.” So naturally he made a series of chocolate wedding favors “cast from the fatal wounds of people lying dead in morgues.”
