Live Listen: Sorry Mom's "babyface"
You are the titanic, and I am jumping off the hull into the sea
I thought I had put two Sorry Mom songs in this newsletter already but I guess it was only “Awesome Party, Dude,” from their 2021 EP Juno Goes to the Big House. The other song I thought I had shared was “I Fucked Your Mom,” a jokey queercore punk banger that’s kind of a cross between “Institutionalized” and “Stacey’s Dad,” and is by far their most popular track according to Spotify streams.
Their Bandcamp says that “sorry mom is a new york based femme queer punk band! they like to hang out and play music and mario kart.” Their first full-length album “babyface” came out about a week ago and I think I’ve listened to it end-to-end seven or eight times already. It’s been a while since an album grabbed me like this, so I thought it would be fun to do a live-listen of it.
For backstory, Out Front Magazine’s Julie River talked to the band about the record and their puzzling label, “Brandy Melville Records.” The post also links to River’s 2022 capsule history of queercore punk, which is apparently being forgotten by the kids today.
I made a list of my favorite bands that this album reminds me of and it included: Fugazi, Pansy Division, L7, Bikini Kill, Hole, PJ Harvey, Green Day, Blink 182, Jeff Rosenstock, Bomb The Music Industry!, AJJ, Modest Mouse, Hum, No Age, Mineral, Tuscadero, Raveonettes, The Breeders, Slint, and Titus Andronicus. I’m sure you’d hear others, we all bring our own galaxy to every musical experience.
Here’s the album on Apple Music and here’s Spotify, let’s give it a listen!
