After yesterday’s Tabs I remembered I had an email conversation with Carles in early 2015, around when he was selling Hipster Runoff and right before Brian Merchant’s profile of him landed in Vice. I tried to recruit him to write a guest post, which never happened, but along the way we talked a bit about ‘scalability,’ “how to sell out authentically,” and Ello [via 'remember ello?'].

Hey! I've been a fan for a while, although I think I missed the "peak era" of hipster runoff by a little bit. I loved the Grantland podcast1 though…
[Here I do an embarrassingly earnest pitch for Carles to guest-post that I am redacting to protect my own tender feelings.]
…Now I think "scalability" is the defining question of our time. Is scalewave the new chillwave? Is there any such thing as alt-scaling?

'What naturally scales?'
'do we want scalable products/solutions in order 2 feel authentic? Or is authenticity rejecting scalability?'
I am definitely familiar with your model, and I would definitely want to write on the platform to 'promote' my own mailing list vibe. It really is weird to me how the email REACH is hella authentic. People will use email 'forever'. They want you to contact them. They will engage your links.
