One of my students showed up in sweatpants and a bikini top today. I refuse to enforce the dress code (NOT FOR ALL THE LOVE IN THE WORLD). We walked down to the library to get books and another teacher stopped me and said "Is this how the kids are dressing these days?" and I thought she meant the bikini top but then she said "sweatpants in public!" and I thought that was the funniest thing I've heard in this hellscape of a school year.

Someone asked the student if she was cold and she said "Duh, yeah!" and then the same student said "isn't that your sweatshirt" and she said "what are you, a cop?" and that was the second funniest thing I've heard in this hellscape of a school year.

To be fair, it wasn't a swimming suit. It was a t-shirt cut into a bikini top. Perhaps there is a word for this but I'm not googling it.

It's also possible that link does NOT let you read the interview! I don't know how anything works. I tried it in an incognito tab and it worked for me, but ???????

It was weird reading an interview with Rusty in Garbage Day, which is the only other newsletter I subscribe to. Like seeing your teachers outside of school.

The Tabs are coming from INSIDE THE TABS!

I turn 40 tomorrow. I mention this only because the only thing that makes me feel 40, aside from body pain and daily reminders I will be probably single forever, is the Garbage Day discord.

This is not to say I would not enjoy a Today in Tabs discord but would I enjoy it more than these sort of laid back open thread Fridays? Unclear.

Your readers tend to be well-informed and witty without being mean-spirited, and as long as it's subscribers-only, I assume you wouldn't need a lot of moderation. I don't think too many Greenwald fanboys would buy subscriptions to thinks just to spread unhappiness, but life is full of surprises.

I enjoy hanging out here on Fridays, and I think I'd enjoy a Discord, too. Discord is the one that feels fun. Slack feels like work. Mighty mystifies me. MS Teams would be an interesting choice.

I...don't know what Discord is. I work in the arts, I think most of my clients are still sending telegrams.

"Hey if I started a Tabs Discord, would you hang out in it?" I would LOVE to host a Discourse for the paid subscribers: https://discourse.org -- it's not real time chat though; there are real time aspects (you can see replies come in as they happen, you can see "x is replying.." at the bottom of a topic, etc) but overall it has more of a forum feel, but.. without all the soviet-era concrete block brutalist charm of a phpBB or vBulletin installation ;)

(oh and it is 100% completely free and open source and all that, so your data belongs to you.)

If it's a definitive no, that's fine, just say so and I'll shut up about this. I'm a superfan of the newsletter, and I think it'd be a remarkably high quality community because the newsletter is so great it tends to attract sophisticated, smart folks.. that's all.

Here's an open letter to the other newsletterers here: how many of you monetize your 'zletters? When did you decide to? How successful are you at getting people to pay? Did it change the way you wrote? (Is it OK to ask these kinds of questions??)

A single-channel discord instance wouldn't interest me much, I have too too many slack/discord/teams/ircs already; could you go halfsies with some other writers, like you do for classifieds? Might be an interesting mix and also get you out of mod duties.

I have a policy against devoting my limited attention span to any new social media platforms. I am both weary and wary.

As someone who has been trapped alone in my apartment with no company but zoom calls and my thoughts for the past year... Discord sounds promising.

Somebody on here whose name I have forgotten recommended this book "We Keep the Dead Close" to me a few weeks back and I started reading it a few days ago and am completely engrossed, so, thank you to that person!

If you’re weary/wary of running a community, maybe...don’t start a Discord? just throwing that out there

Whatever happens, I'll still read Tabs but I would only do this and nothing else. As it is, I feel like I'm posting out to a bunch of like-minded people I think I like (and think they like me, but I'm wary/weary). I will have an ad running in one of the upcoming Tabs to promote something-TBD but in the meantime, this just feels right. Otherwise nobody knows me and I can expose just what I choose. Sure I check to see who liked what I wrote, who replied or replied to my reply and so on. It's small, simple. It's doesn't even have that lil' Javascript that would turn a hard return into activating the "POST" button. As someone who got burnt on a random dumbass SM post (which might one day come back and ruin my career when I have a career) I am too wary/weary of SM to really engage, so I'll do this and a few other small things

But, I think, when I run that ad on Tabs (which includes Study Hall and Deezlinks as part of the bundle!) I will be 'out there.' And then ... we'll see how I feel about the exposure. Right now, this is plenty of exposure. To likeminded people. I think like me.
